ACPIN is spearheaded by an executive commitee of enthusiastic volunteers who all work in the field of physiotherapy and neurology, either as clinicians, in education or research.

The Executive committee is made up of 14 representatives from across the UK. Members are elected, by the membership, for a four to six year term at the Annual General Meeting. The Chair is elected from within the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee meets three times a year and an additional three meetings are held with a representative from each region. Together, the executive committee and regional reps form the National Committee. At the national committee meetings, the committee divide into four working groups.

The report of the national meeting in November 2008 follows:

THE CPD/EVENTS WORKING GROUP

At the last sub group meeting finishing touches were agreed for the 2009 AGM and upper limb conference. Additionally the list of speakers were discussed/proposed for the neurology strand of this years CSP Congress in Liverpool which is once again being organised by Siobhan Macauley. We were delighted that Louise Ada had agreed to be our keynote speaker at the event, which prompted us to consider inviting another international speaker to the 2010 ACPIN AGM and conference. It is planned that the 2010 event will be residential but the topic has yet to be decided.

RESEARCH AND SYNAPSE

If you have a model of good practice or an audit you have conducted and found worthwhile, please tell us all about it. It can then be written up and reviewed for publication in Synapse.

A few questions that the report will follow will be similar to these:

• Can you give a brief summary of the audit / model of good practice?

• What made you initiate it?

• How did you go about it?

• What measurements did you use?

• What resources did you use?

• What did you learn from the whole process?

• How has it changed your practice?

Examples could include any service development projects, or programmes which you feel have been beneficial to patient care. If you would like to talk any ideas over, please contact Louise Dunthorne, Synapse Co-ordinator.

RESEARCH SUBGROUP

The aims of the research subgroup are to:

• Support the editor of Synapse in the generation and review of articles for Synapse

• provide support for ACPIN national committee and liaise with the CSP and external agencies on research-related issues

• promote and support research activity within the membership

• advance understanding of aspects of research among the membership

Communicating research
If there are topics you would like to see featured in the Research Forum articles in Synapse do let us know.

Communicating is a vital part of the research process but it is often difficult to get started. Synapse welcomes research articles especially from those seeking experience writing for publication.

Poster presentations are always welcome at ACPIN conferences to increase discussion amongst therapists and while ACPIN cannot produce the poster, advice and support can be offered. There is a £50 prize for the best poster at the National Conference in March.
